The task is formulated concerning the management of technical condition of the operated main gas pipeline system. Brief analysis of the working conditions of gas pipelines is given, the concept of management of the technical condition reflecting the features of the native gas transportation system is presented in the article. The importance is noted related to conducting diagnostic work for assessment of the technical condition, the principles of technical condition study are stated. The updated strength criterion is introduced. It is based on the comparison of actual maximum stresses in the dangerous section with the rial characteristics of the tensile and yield strength. When developing the criterion of the operated pipelines strength, it is taken into account that the use of conditional coefficients introduced in the building norms in the process of operation is not correct. For the real strength assessment of potentially dangerous sections of the operated pipelines, it is required to compare the actual stresses with the specific mechanical characteristics of pipes based on the field measurements or the certified values. The proposed strength criterion is based on the research experience and practical assessments of gas pipelines performance. The criterion considers operating conditions of the linear part and process pipelines. Due to introduction of statistical characteristics of dispersion of the mechanical properties of the pipe products, in the criterion the level of technology for the production of pipes is taken into account, and, thereby, the strength assessment is clarified under specific conditions, including for one class of pipes. The criterion does not contradict generally accepted approaches to the assessment of structures strength, and eliminates the drawbacks caused by the application of building norms to the operating facilities and reducing the effectiveness of diagnostic work. Application of the criterion allows to use fully the results of diagnostic work related to the analysis of technical condition. The methodology is presented concerning the typical periods of gas pipelines safe operation. As a module of technical condition management system, the concept was developed for assessment of the gas pipeline reliability as a whole.
